What is Scaling and Root Planing?

It is a procedure, which removes hard and soft deposits from the tooth and root surface.

What are the benefits?

Is it painful?

Whether or not the procedure is painful depends upon the condition of your gums and your pain tolerance level. However we prefer to clean your teeth and gums with anesthetics if you are afraid of pain. You might need multiple visits for that.

How many visits do I need?

The numbers of visits depend upon the health of your gum condition.

Does my gum bleed during the procedure?

Your gum may bleed during the procedure. But that is absolutely normal. Your gums can bleed while brushing and flossing even few days after the treatment. That should stop.

Do I have to take any medication?

You may need to take medication. Rinsing with warm water mixed to salt can be helpful.

Why I should clean my teeth twice a year?

You might not be able to clean all the areas of teeth with brush and floss. There are some areas where toothbrushes can not reach. To clean those areas professional cleaning is necessary which can be either hand scaling or by ultrasonic machine.

What will happen if I do not do scaling?

You may develop gum diseases and decay.

I have heard that teeth will become sensitive and mobile after this treatment. Is it true?

This is a very popular myth. In some cases, if one has extreme tartar, they may feel their tooth has become loose once we remove them. However, this is not due the procedure, this is due to the tartar that has damaged bone underneath the gums.

What are the precautions that one should take after scaling?

  1. Do not eat hot, cold and sour food for few hours.
  2. Gargle with warm saline water after meal for 2/3 days.
