What is pits and fissure sealants? Why it is necessary?

Pits and fissure sealants are a plastic coat that is applied on a chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. These posterior(back) teeth have depressions on their surface named as pits and fissures. Because pits and fissures are difficult to clean we recommend these sealants. This sealant then make a barrier and protect teeth from decay.

Is sealant application a complicated procedure?

The procedure is painless, simple, fast and easy. It takes only a few minutes to seal each tooth. First, the teeth to be sealed are cleaned and polished through. Then we roughen the chewing surfaces of the teeth with an acid solution. We leave that solution on a tooth surface for few seconds and wash thoroughly. Acid helps to create pores on the tooth enamel so that sealant can adhere to the tooth. The sealant is then ‘painted’ onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens.
This sealant then make a barrier and protect teeth from decay.

How long will they lasts?

Sealants can withstand chewing force and reapplication is not frequently needed. They can lasts many years.

Who is a good candidate for sealants?

The probability of developing decay starts early in life, so children and the teenagers are obvious candidates. However, adult can also have this and protect their teeth from decay.

If I put sealant on my teeth, will my teeth never have a decay?

Sealant is applied only on the chewing surface of the tooth. If you fail to clean other surface of the tooth, you may develop decay on other surface.
